Memorial Day is an impactful reminder of the strength and selflessness exhibited by our veterans. It's a day to honor their unwavering commitment to defending our freedom and preserving peace. Today, we pay tribute to two distinguished veterans: Karla Schumann, who served in the United States Air Force, and Hunter Wernli, who fought and served as a mechanic in the United States Army. Though not local to Lubbock, their service resonates deeply with communities across the nation.
Meet Karla Schumann and Hunter Wernli, Our Veterans
Karla Schumann (pictured left, center) enlisted in the Air Force when she was 18 years old, driven by a deep sense of duty and patriotism. Her deployment overseas was met with challenges, but she persevered, drawing strength from her comrades and the support of her family back home in Minnesota. Today, Karla continues to advocate for veterans' rights and remains actively involved in community initiatives aimed at supporting service members and their families. "It was difficult," Karla says, "but the support and sense of family you become a part of means everything. Coming home to a community that has always supported its veterans makes me feel truly appreciated and proud to call this place home."
Hunter Wernli (pictured right, center), an Army veteran who served as a mechanic and rose to the rank of officer, shares his inspiring journey. “Serving in the Army was a life-changing experience,” Hunter reflects. “As a mechanic, I was responsible for maintaining the vehicles that my fellow soldiers depended on. I learned the value of teamwork and formed unbreakable bonds during my time overseas—those guys are my family. It’s heartwarming to see how much people appreciate the sacrifices we made. It reminds me daily of why I served.”
